What happened
Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces launched the Dawn of Yemen campaign and said they retook Mokha and positions near Bab el-Mandeb. The Houthis said they still controlled their battlefield gains and denied losing territory. Yemen’s war began after the Houthis seized Sanaa in 2014, and Bab el-Mandeb carries about 12% of global trade. The renewed fighting comes as the U.S.-Iran war strains energy markets and raises the route’s value for Saudi exports. The Houthis claimed attacks on Saudi airports and oil sites; Saudi authorities confirmed airport damage and three injuries. Turkey and Pakistan agreed to deploy forces to support Saudi Arabia. Yemen’s government says it aims to retake Sanaa, but its gains remain uncertain.
How each side covered it
From the left
Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Al Jazeera, under the headline “Yemen forces claim key gains near Bab al-Mandeb: What’s the latest?”.
From the right
Right-leaning outlets treated the battle as a widening threat to trade, aviation and battlefield conduct. Daily Mail stressed damage beyond Yemen, warning of pressure on oil, shipping, inflation and growth, and lingered on footage it said showed surrendering fighters killed. Washington Examiner focused on Houthi strikes reaching Saudi civilian aviation and threatening bystanders and international flights.
