What happened

Sea and aerial drones struck two commercial vessels about 80 miles off Bulgaria, inside the NATO member’s exclusive economic zone. One vessel sank, and the other caught fire. The strikes came amid the Russia-Ukraine war, after repeated Black Sea drone attacks raised fears for trade and energy supplies. A day earlier, a drone attack sank the Turkish-owned Royad Mammadov in Romania’s exclusive economic zone, killing two people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Bulgaria verified a combined Russian attack, while Bulgarian authorities said the drones’ origin was still under investigation. The sunken Alfa Watan’s crew remained unaccounted for. Bulgaria is investigating the attack.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Seattle Times, under the headline “Bulgaria’s leader says drone attack hits 2 commercial vessels, and Ukraine’s president blames Russia”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the strikes as a NATO-adjacent danger while keeping Russian responsibility tied to attributed claims. Fox News quoted Cameron Chell saying the strikes signaled a dangerous escalation and possible larger invasion posture by Russia. On attribution, the New York Post said Ukraine blamed Russian drones, while Romania did not state a cause. ZeroHedge quoted Rumen Radev calling the attacks violations of international and maritime law.
