What happened

Drones struck two merchant ships off Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, sinking the Guinea-Bissau-flagged HS Dignity. The attacks came amid the Russia-Ukraine war, in which both countries have used drones around the Black Sea. Commercial vessels in the area had also been attacked the previous week. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev condemned the strikes and summoned the Russian ambassador. He said Bulgaria lacked conclusive evidence, though the outcome appeared to benefit Russia. Ukraine’s foreign minister blamed Russia, while Russia’s ambassador suggested a third party could have staged a provocation. Five HS Dignity crew members were rescued, and 11 remained missing. Responsibility remains unconfirmed.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets centered the attacks as a human emergency, stressing missing sailors and rescue efforts. CNN cited Bulgarian officials on the missing crew, while tying the response to Bulgarian leaders’ suspicion that Russia likely benefited.

From the right

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Daily Mail, under the headline “Two ships hit in drone strikes off Bulgaria, including Ukrainian boat”.
