What happened

Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv and about a dozen other Ukrainian regions overnight into Wednesday, killing at least 19 civilians, including four children, Ukrainian officials said. About 60 people were wounded after Ukraine warned Russia was preparing a major attack but could not stop the barrage. The strikes are part of a long-range air war that has continued while ground forces remain largely deadlocked since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion. Ukraine struggles to intercept ballistic missiles and newer jet-powered drones, and officials say Patriot interceptors are in short supply. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it targeted missile and drone facilities; Ukrainian officials said homes and civilian infrastructure were hit. Air defenses downed 161 targets.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the barrage as a devastating attack on civilians and civilian infrastructure, stressing the human toll over battlefield movement. Al Jazeera highlighted President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s claim that Russia wanted to strike Ukraine “painfully and demonstratively” through energy sites. The Boston Globe emphasized Ukraine’s limited defenses against ballistic missiles and new jet-powered drones.

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Daily Mail, under the headline “Putin marks 74th birthday with 'massive' air strike on Kyiv”.
