What happened

A landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River in Nepal’s Gorkha district, then dammed water broke through and flooded communities downstream. The flood swept away about three dozen homes and several bridges, damaging power lines, communications links and a hydropower construction site. Nepal was still recovering from catastrophic August flooding that killed more than 1,400 people and left thousands missing. Authorities ordered riverside residents to evacuate or move to safer ground as rescue teams worked in the area. At least five people were reported missing, while about 50 people were rescued. The full damage remained unclear as officials continued rescues and monitored the river.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the flood mainly as a public-safety emergency, centering warnings to leave danger zones and rescue work. Al Jazeera stressed official evacuation pleas while linking the disaster to Nepal’s recent deadly flooding. The Los Angeles Times cited the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on damage reaching bridges, utilities and hydropower construction.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the flood as another severe blow to Nepal, while giving more space to dramatic destruction and urgent evacuations. The New York Post tied the disaster to another recent natural catastrophe in Nepal and cited authorities urging villagers toward safer areas. It lingered on video showing raging water tearing apart a bridge.
