What happened

Independent MP Helen Haines, 65, was critically injured when a Toyota Land Cruiser struck her outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, regional Victoria. Police and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a possible deliberate attack, while police said they were still investigating intent. The incident renewed concerns about politicians' safety in Australia, where elected officials have traditionally been accessible. Officials recorded more than 1,000 threats against politicians in the 2025–26 financial year. Haines has represented Indi since 2019 after working as a nurse and midwife. Albanese condemned political violence and warned that political discourse had become more heated. A 43-year-old man was arrested after a bystander intervened. A joint counter-terrorism team is investigating the motive and whether Haines knew the man.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the crash through political violence and public access, while stressing that motive was unresolved. CNN used authorities’ account to present the episode as an apparent deliberate strike rather than a routine accident. HuffPost tied it to fears for accessible lawmakers, and The Guardian emphasized Haines’s cross-party standing as a principled local figure.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets led with a suspected targeted attack facing counter-terrorism scrutiny, then lingered on the personal and physical toll. The Daily Mail centered police language about a suspected targeted attack while pairing it with severe injury details and the ordeal for her family.
