What happened

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Israel on Monday and met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The trip came during a war that began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. U.S. officials have been considering renewed strikes as tensions continue. It also came about a week before Israel’s Oct. 27 parliamentary election, when Netanyahu is trying to keep his coalition in power. A Netanyahu spokesman said the two discussed regional threats and U.S.-Israeli cooperation. The meeting took place at Ovda Air Base, where U.S. forces are stationed. The Pentagon did not publicly confirm the visit. It remains unclear whether Iran attack plans were discussed.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the meeting around Netanyahu’s election pressure and the administration’s stalled Iran diplomacy. The New York Times stressed the timing after Trump’s endorsement, saying Netanyahu was facing “a tough election campaign”. It also connected the trip to failed efforts to secure a lasting Iran deal and Trump’s threats of renewed action.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the visit as a sign that Iran war planning may be active again, while tying it to election timing. Just the News emphasized Trump’s endorsement, Netanyahu’s upcoming vote, and Trump’s suggestion that military operations against Iran could resume. The American Conservative widened the lens to regional spillover, including Houthi attacks, shipping threats, Saudi security, and energy markets.
