President Donald Trump secretly left Ankara on July 8 aboard a smaller U.S. military aircraft after intelligence warned of a credible Iranian threat against him and Air Force One. The operation had Trump board the plane presented as Air Force One after a NATO summit, then move under cover of an airport catering container to an alternate C-32A while the decoy aircraft departed with White House staff and reporters aboard. Trump confirmed Tuesday that the Secret Service and military directed him to take a different plane. Democrats sought a congressional briefing on why passengers and the public were misled.

Russia released Robert Gilman, a 32-year-old former U.S. Marine, on Tuesday after more than four years in custody, with U.S. officials saying Vladimir Putin approved a humanitarian pardon amid concerns about his health. Gilman was arrested in Voronezh on Jan. 17, 2022, accused of drunkenly kicking a police officer, and later received prison sentences totaling 10 years on disputed charges. President Donald Trump said he raised the case with Putin and that no prisoner swap was involved. Gilman was being flown back to the United States for medical treatment.
