What happened

South Carolina authorities charged Nancy Mace’s former fiancé Brendan Patrick Bryant and Eric Bernard Bowman with voyeurism, and John Douglas Osborne with assault and sexual-conduct charges. Bowman also faces obstruction and victim-identification charges after investigators said he reset a phone sought under warrant and posted the victim’s name and a video on X. The alleged assault happened in October 2018 at a Sullivan’s Island home, before Mace and Bryant were engaged. Mace made the accusations public in a February 2025 House speech, saying she found images and videos of alleged abuse on Bryant’s phone. Bryant and Osborne deny wrongdoing through their attorneys. The men were booked, bonded out, and remain presumed innocent.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the case as exploitation by multiple men, while tying it to Mace’s stated concern about weak investigations into crimes against women. The Guardian cited state agents saying the men discussed the assault beforehand, then photographed and recorded it. It also highlighted Mace’s argument that crimes against women are not investigated thoroughly.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets centered the case on an incapacitated woman and stressed whether the charges support Mace’s earlier public accusations. The New York Post cited prosecutors saying the men coordinated over who would commit the acts. RedState framed the charges as possible vindication for Mace after her accusations and her ex-fiancé’s defamation lawsuit.
