What happened

A 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three children and a teacher. Police said a community member pursued the gunman into the building and shot him, stopping the attack before officers arrived. Silver Rail serves kindergarten through fifth grade and has about 459 enrolled students. Police said the attack began with a report of someone firing a long gun at a vehicle near the school. Later calls said the shooter had entered the building after firing at locked doors. Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said the community was heartbroken. The district canceled Friday classes and activities, and the FBI was assisting.
