What happened

A 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher. Police said a community member followed the suspect into the school and shot him, ending the attack before officers arrived. The shooting landed in a state where gun restrictions remain contested, including voter-approved rules on permits, background checks and high-capacity magazines delayed by court challenges. Authorities evacuated classrooms one by one and reunited families at a nearby church. Superintendent Steven Cook said the community was heartbroken, while Governor Tina Kotek thanked the person who intervened. Police said the suspect forced entry by shooting locked doors, but they have not identified a motive.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the attack around civilian intervention, community grief, and the broader American gun-violence crisis. The New York Times quoted police chief Mike Krantz saying a community member pursued and killed the suspect inside, then described a public memorial and connected the shooting to the country’s long pattern of school attacks.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets cast the armed civilian as the story’s decisive figure and linked the attack to arguments against stricter gun laws. The New York Post called the responder a “heroic bystander” who ended the rampage. For the Daily Mail, the shooting was a senseless tragedy that left parents terrified and the community needing solidarity and prayer. Breitbart News argued the intervention showed the value of armed citizens despite renewed Democratic gun-control demands.
