What happened

Holdout juror Michael Desronvil defended his vote to convict Lindsay Clancy after the jury split eleven to one following about 40 hours of deliberations. The judge declared a mistrial in September. Clancy admitted through her lawyers that she strangled her three children in January 2023, but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Her defense said postpartum psychosis left her not criminally responsible, while prosecutors said she knew the killings were wrong and planned them. Desronvil said he had no reasonable doubt and viewed her actions as “methodical.” Other jurors disputed his approach. Prosecutors have not said whether they will retry Clancy. A further hearing was scheduled for Nov. 2.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the mistrial around one immovable vote against a majority that rejected criminal responsibility. HuffPost emphasized Desronvil’s view that Clancy’s conduct seemed “methodical,” while keeping that judgment in his voice. The Guardian lingered on how his role became a controversy after his identity became known.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed Desronvil as a juror defending an evidence-based conviction despite pressure to yield. The Daily Mail led with his judgment that the killings were a “methodical execution,” and stressed the backlash he faced. Fox News focused on the defense push for his phone records while noting other jurors also had phones.
