What happened

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first joint public appearance in the UK since returning, visiting Nottingham’s Community Recording Studio on October 15. Their schedule also included Himmah food bank and Epic Partners, which supports disadvantaged young people through sports, education and mentoring. The couple returned to the UK with their children in August, but they remain private citizens and are not resuming royal duties. They left those duties in 2020, citing press intrusion, racism in British institutions, online abuse and family strains. A September letter sent on King Charles’s behalf said their charity work is private, and they should not use HRH forms of address. The couple said they were surprised by the letter while accepting their status.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the return as private charity work, while also noting the royal-style presentation around it. CNN emphasized that the couple were not acting for King Charles, then lingered on a warm welcome from well-wishers. HuffPost focused on the appearance as a brand-rebuilding effort, saying the events had “touches of royal style”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets cast the appearances as an attempt to recreate royal status without royal authority or duties. Fox News cited Schofield describing the events as “royal theatre,” and tied that critique to frustration over the late queen’s wishes. Daily Mail instead leaned into the affectionate reunion, highlighting cheers, hugs and selfies during the public return.
