The reporting
Michigan reported 1,251 cyclosporiasis cases as of July 9, up from 170 on June 30, with 44 hospitalizations in the state’s largest such outbreak on record. Ohio has reported more than 500 cases, Illinois 141, and similar illnesses are being investigated in 28 states. Investigators have not identified a source; Cyclospora cayetanensis is typically contracted through food or water contaminated with feces, including fresh produce. The infection can cause weeks of watery diarrhea, cramps, bloating, gas and nausea.
