Cyclospora Outbreak Widens

Michigan reported 1,562 cyclosporiasis cases since June 22 as of July 10, with 44 hospitalizations, making the state the center of a broader U.S. surge in the diarrheal parasitic infection. Health officials have not identified a source; Cyclospora cayetanensis is commonly linked to food or water contaminated with feces, especially fresh produce and herbs. Cases have also risen in Ohio, Illinois, Virginia, Maryland and other states, while federal investigators track reports across 31 states and 86 hospitalizations. The infection can cause weeks of watery diarrhea, cramps, bloating, gas and nausea.
