What happened

CVS Pharmacy and its subsidiaries agreed to pay $315 million to settle federal claims over opioid and other controlled-substance prescriptions. The deal requires CVS to add safeguards, including proactive monitoring of opioid prescribing patterns. The settlement resolves a 2024 Justice Department lawsuit alleging CVS filled prescriptions without a legitimate medical purpose and sought federal reimbursement for many of them. The case is part of federal efforts tied to the U.S. opioid addiction and overdose crisis. CVS said its pharmacists are trained in safe medication use and have programs to guide patient decisions. The Justice Department alleged CVS ignored warning signs; CVS strongly disagreed and admitted no wrongdoing.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Boston Globe, under the headline “CVS agrees to pay $315 million to settle Justice Department case over opioid prescriptions - The…”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the settlement as a federal enforcement win, fraud case and corporate-accountability story. Washington Examiner cited Stanley Woodward Jr. calling it “a significant milestone” in fighting the opioid epidemic. RedState cast the allegations as bogus claims to federal healthcare programs. Washington Times cited a whistleblower lawsuit accusing CVS of acting “to fuel its own profits”.
