What happened

A gunman killed eight people at a home on Perry Street in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday, October 9, before apparently killing himself. Officers found two women dead outside the residence, then found more victims inside. Police were called shortly before 5 p.m. after reports of gunfire. Witnesses said a man fired outside the home and then went inside. The victims included two children and a pregnant woman. Authorities said the suspected gunman was related to seven victims; the eighth was the pregnant woman’s friend. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah called the scene among the most heartbreaking of his career. Investigators determined all deaths happened before officers arrived. The city said there was no continuing public threat. Lorah said investigators would not speculate about a motive.

How each side covered it

Left-leaning outlets framed the Erie shooting as a rare local tragedy, stressing experienced officers’ shock more than blame or motive. CNN centered Lorah’s reaction and lingered on the victims’ vulnerability. The Los Angeles Times emphasized official reassurance that the danger had ended, including corrections about sounds during the police operation.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets presented the killings as a horrific community tragedy, with more attention to innocent victims and the timing of the violence. Fox News leaned on Lorah’s account of devastation beyond his law-enforcement experience. The New York Post emphasized the gunman’s violence against vulnerable victims. The Daily Mail highlighted the city’s statement that the violence had ended before police arrived.
