What happened
A 45-year-old man killed eight people in an Erie, Pennsylvania, home on Friday before dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said seven victims were his relatives, while the eighth was a pregnant woman’s friend. The dead included two young children, the pregnant woman and her unborn baby. Authorities have described the gunman as a grandfather and family patriarch, but they have not publicly named him or the victims. Julius Windham, whose 1-year-old daughter was killed, said the man seemed cheerful and ordinary, but called that “a front.” Investigators have not disclosed a motive. The police chief said mental health could have played a role.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning outlets framed the killings as a stunning rupture inside a family, stressing how little the gunman’s public manner seemed to reveal. CNN centered Julius Windham’s grief, using his account of staying strong for relatives and the community to give the story its emotional core.
From the right
Right-leaning outlets cast the case as a brutal family betrayal, with the grandfather role central to their telling. Fox News highlighted Debra Eller’s disbelief over harm to children and relatives, using her reaction to underline the horror. The New York Post emphasized the contrast between the gunman’s smiling appearance and the violence relatives did not expect.
