What happened

An Air Force service member died after falling during a pregame rappelling demonstration before UTSA’s football game against Navy. He was assigned to Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron, and officials have not released his name. The demonstration was part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game, with four service members set to descend from the Alamodome rafters. The squadron trains specialists who direct air and artillery strikes for Army and Marine units, and its training includes rope rappelling. The roughly 170-foot descent unfolded before spectators, and responders treated him on the field. The game was delayed about 10 minutes, then went ahead. The Air Force said the incident is under investigation; officials have not disclosed the cause.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the fall as a military tribute turned into campus grief, with attention to support for people affected. Raw Story pushed a sharper angle, saying anger turned toward Hegseth and Pentagon leadership over recruiting spectacles critics saw as needless risk.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the death as a shocking public tragedy, dwelling on the fear of fans who watched it unfold. The Gateway Pundit emphasized that an event meant to honor service members and display military skill had become a nightmare.
