What happened

Katie Zacharia called her brief service as White House press secretary an honor after leaving the job five days into her tenure. The White House, through communications director Steven Cheung, said Zacharia was transitioning to another administration role, while news reports citing administration sources described her removal as an ouster. Zacharia began on October 12, after President Donald Trump chose her to replace Karoline Leavitt, who had left in August. Scrutiny intensified after Zacharia acknowledged failing the California bar exam and not being licensed to practice in the United States. Trump said the media treated her harshly and urged her to reconsider staying unhappy. The White House had not named a replacement.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets cast Zacharia’s exit as a humiliation for both her preparation and Trump’s hiring judgment. HuffPost framed the episode as a fast “flameout” driven by weak readiness and inflated credentials. CNN blamed a rudderless personnel operation that prizes loyalty and TV instincts over qualifications. The Guardian stressed a gendered pattern in which women lose posts while men survive scandals.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the exit as a personal collapse, while stressing loyalty, media pressure and internal intrigue. Daily Mail emphasized weak polish and unresolved credential questions. New York Post highlighted Zacharia’s warm words for Trump after leaving. The Gateway Pundit centered Trump’s claim of relentless mainstream-media abuse. Townhall leaned into allegations of a Wiles-backed “hit,” while noting the denial.
