The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services finalized a rule, effective Oct. 13, ending federal Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program funding for gender-affirming care for minors. The rule bars federal payments for puberty blockers, hormone treatments and transition-related surgeries; CHIP coverage is barred for patients under 19. Children already receiving hormone therapy will have a six-month phase-out period. The policy is part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to restrict gender-affirming medical care for transgender and nonbinary youth.
