The reporting

A neutral summary of the key facts most sources agree on, drawn from reporting across the political spectrum.

U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman in Maryland issued a preliminary injunction blocking President Donald Trump’s Aug. 6 executive order to limit birthright citizenship. The order sought to deny automatic U.S. citizenship to some children born in the country, including children whose parents are “alien enemies,” foreign government employees or involved in so-called “birth tourism.” Boardman wrote that the order was “almost certainly unconstitutional” and said the administration misread the Supreme Court’s June ruling on Trump’s earlier birthright-citizenship order. The case is a class-action lawsuit brought by immigrant families and advocacy groups.

Order legally baselessLeft & Center

Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order is unlawful because it conflicts with the Supreme Court’s recent ruling. The order misuses or distorts that ruling to justify a policy the Court did not authorize.
