What happened
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor to investigate sexual-assault allegations at a Cornell University fraternity house. The allegations involve an October 2024 incident with a former Cornell student and seven men. The former student, Jane Doe, alleges she was sexually assaulted at the house. The seven men deny wrongdoing, and no criminal charges have been filed. The Tompkins County district attorney earlier declined to prosecute. Andrew Miltenberg, lawyer for accused student Gillio Lopes, asked James to recuse herself, citing an earlier post supporting Doe and survivors. Hochul said James would follow the evidence. James declined comment. Whether charges will be brought remains unknown.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning outlets framed the case as warranting a fresh, thorough review while raising concerns about James’s impartiality. The Boston Globe said James’s public support for the accuser made her an inappropriate choice to conduct an impartial review. Raw Story quoted Elie Honig faulting the first prosecutor for relying on a short summary, and also linked James’s Cornell comments to her Trump rhetoric.
From the right
Right-leaning outlets treated the appointment as both a due-process problem and an election-season maneuver. The New York Post argued that James and Hochul had prejudged the allegations, weakening impartial review and the accused students’ presumption of innocence, while casting Hochul’s choice of James as a campaign tool to mobilize voters.
