What happened

A lawyer for accused student Gillio Lopes asked Attorney General Letitia James to step aside from the Cornell fraternity rape investigation after Gov. Kathy Hochul named her special prosecutor. James is now assigned to review the sexual-assault allegations and the initial responses by law enforcement and Cornell. Jane Doe alleges seven fraternity members drugged and raped her during an October 2024 party; none has been criminally charged. Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten first declined to prosecute, later reopened the case, and stood by his assessment. James said she would not comment on a Facebook post supporting Doe and survivors. Campus protests continue. Cornell’s Faculty Senate is due to vote on a no-confidence resolution.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the dispute as a test of prosecutorial neutrality and of whether an earlier failed inquiry made outside review unavoidable. MEDIAite emphasized that James was unfit for the role because she had taken a side before weighing evidence. New York Magazine blamed the prior local inquiry, saying Van Houten “thoroughly botched” it.
