What happened

President Donald Trump attacked Democratic Senate nominee Annie Andrews in a Truth Social post, using an anti-transgender slur three times. He also endorsed Republican Sen. Darline Graham in the South Carolina race. Graham took the seat after Gov. Henry McMaster appointed her following the sudden death of her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham. The contest has tightened, with CNN moving it from solidly Republican to likely Republican and a Daily Beast-cited poll showing Graham ahead by about one point. Andrews, a pediatrician who is not transgender, says she opposes gender-affirming surgery for minors and transgender athletes in women’s sports. Trump urged voters to back Graham. Andrews said she is running for families. The candidates were scheduled to debate October 11.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Trump’s post as an anti-transgender attack that replaced a policy case with an insult. CNN led with Trump using the slur against Andrews, making the language itself the central news point. The Daily Beast cast the move as a bid to rescue Graham as a once-safer seat grew more competitive.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed Trump’s post as a values-based attack, while noting tension with Andrews’s own public positions. The Gateway Pundit emphasized Trump’s nickname and tied it to claims that Andrews backs transgender rights and open borders. The Washington Examiner focused on the clash between those attacks and Andrews’s stated opposition to surgeries for children and transgender athletes in women’s sports.
