What happened

Republican Sen. Darline Graham, Democrat Annie Andrews and Libertarian Kasie Whitener met Sunday in the South Carolina Senate race’s only scheduled debate. The debate came three weeks before voters choose who will serve a full six-year term. Graham was appointed after her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, died in July, and the winner will be South Carolina’s first woman elected to the Senate. Andrews said Graham would not stand up to President Trump. Graham defended Trump’s policies and said Andrews was a radical liberal, while Andrews rejected that label. The candidates also clashed over Iran, costs, artificial intelligence, Social Security and Graham’s qualifications. No further debate is scheduled.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets cast the debate as a fresh test of Graham’s readiness, with special focus on national security and the seat’s sudden competitiveness. CNN highlighted Andrews questioning Graham’s fitness for a full term, quoting her as calling Graham “unserious and unqualified”. HuffPost framed the race as tighter because Lindsey Graham is no longer the candidate. Daily Beast criticized Graham’s Iran argument as a bid to blame Democrats for Trump’s war.

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Washington Examiner, under the headline “Graham and Andrews trade identity-based insults in contentious debate”.
