What happened

Senate Leadership Fund, the main Republican Senate super PAC, plans to spend $5 million to support Republican Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina, mainly on television ads. The move comes after President Donald Trump used an anti-transgender slur three times against Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, who is not transgender, while urging voters to back Graham. The spending is an insurance policy in a close race in a state Trump carried by about 18 points in 2024. Graham was appointed after her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, died in July, then won a Republican runoff. Trump said Andrews backed liberal policies; Andrews said she is focused on families and costs. Graham’s campaign accused Andrews of misleading ads funded by out-of-state money. The election is November 3.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the Republican spending as an alarm bell in a race they said should not be close. Daily Beast treated the move as a panic response to a vulnerable Senate seat. Daily Kos cast Graham as a weak political heir whose family name had not secured the race. MEDIAite focused on Trump’s anti-trans language as cruel, divisive campaigning.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets led with both the anti-trans attack and Republican concern about holding the seat. The New York Post foregrounded that the insult was aimed at a candidate who is not transgender. Daily Mail emphasized GOP anxiety over a South Carolina seat that normally would be safe.
