What happened

Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Troy Jackson faced off in their first debate in Maine’s closely watched Senate race. The contest could help decide which party controls the Senate, and recent polls have shown it tied or within the margin of error. Jackson tried to link Collins to President Donald Trump, while Collins stressed her disagreements with the administration and said her seniority helps bring federal money to Maine. On abortion, Collins defended her vote for Justice Brett Kavanaugh; Jackson challenged it, while Collins pointed to his past support for restrictions. Jackson accused Collins of links to a pay-to-play scheme; Collins denied it, and an FBI spokesperson said an earlier inquiry found nothing implicating her. The candidates are scheduled for three more debates.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the debate as a high-stakes test of whether Jackson could turn a tight race into a clear contrast. CNN emphasized the debate stretch as a proving ground for Jackson’s statewide pitch. MS NOW lingered on Jackson’s working-class image while questioning whether relatability shows readiness for Washington. Joe.My.God. highlighted Democratic attacks tying Collins to Trump.

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Daily Mail, under the headline “Senate hopeful blasts 'arsonist' Susan Collins in debate showdown”.
