What happened

Royal Navy member Teddy Young, 24, has been charged under the National Security Act after an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing London. The charges allege he prepared to disclose protected information between November 2024 and May 2025. They also allege he obtained, copied, recorded or retained it to benefit a foreign power. Authorities have not named that power, though police described it as unidentified. Young had been arrested in May 2025, released on bail, stripped of clearance and removed from duties. Police said the case is not linked to suspected activity near RAF Fairford. The Royal Navy said it would not comment during proceedings. Young was due in court.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the case as a grave security matter involving a serving military member allegedly seeking to benefit a foreign power. The Guardian, quoting Cmdr Helen Flanagan on “very serious charges,” presented the investigation as coordinated work between counterterrorism police and defence officials to manage security risks. Separately, the allegations were treated as unconnected to the RAF Fairford investigation.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets cast the case as an alleged betrayal involving sensitive information, with sharper focus on the suspected beneficiary. The New York Post emphasized police language about disclosure to a foreign power and separated the case from RAF Fairford. The Daily Mail went further by presenting the foreign power as understood to be Russia.
