What happened

Arlington County filed a federal lawsuit Thursday seeking to block construction of President Trump’s proposed Triumphal Arch. The county argues that the National Park Service violated the National Environmental Policy Act through an inadequate environmental assessment, limited alternatives and incomplete impact review. The proposed 250-foot arch would stand at Memorial Circle near Arlington County and Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac from the Lincoln Memorial. The Park Service has acknowledged adverse effects on historic views. County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti said Arlington took part in good faith, but serious community effects were ignored. The Park Service says no final build decision has been made, while the county calls the process rushed. The National Capital Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a final vote on November 5.
