What happened

President Donald Trump announced that Katie Zacharia will become the next White House press secretary, replacing Karoline Leavitt. The job had been vacant since late August, when Leavitt left after saying she wanted more time with her family following the birth of her second child. Zacharia is a conservative commentator and communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, which operates Truth Social. She also briefly served as a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson. The White House had held few formal briefings since Leavitt’s exit. Trump praised Zacharia as a loyal MAGA supporter, while Zacharia thanked him and said she looked forward to working with reporters. Her start date has not been announced.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the pick as another sign that Trump prizes loyal MAGA media defenders over a more independent press operation. CNN highlighted a White House official’s account that negative past comments about Trump had hurt other candidates. Rolling Stone stressed what it called Zacharia’s “bizarre” and reactionary public record. AlterNet mocked Scott Jennings as a loyal defender who still missed the job.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed Zacharia as a prepared conservative communicator whose loyalty and media experience fit the podium. RedState emphasized her legal background and longtime conservative media role as preparation to defend the administration publicly. The New York Post presented her as a longtime Trump backer and MAGA fixture. The Washington Times lingered on her earlier family strain from Washington travel.
