What happened

The Bulwark found deleted posts from Katie Zacharia’s former and current social media accounts after President Donald Trump appointed her White House press secretary. Zacharia is filling the role Karoline Leavitt left in late August. Before the appointment, Zacharia worked in public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security and as a communications adviser for Trump Media and Technology Group, which operates Truth Social. Afterward, she called the job “the honor of a lifetime” and said she wanted to communicate the administration’s record. The deleted posts included calls to suspend habeas corpus and have the federal government take over California. The White House did not respond before publication.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the deleted posts as evidence of hard-line loyalty to Trump, focusing on constitutional limits, vaccine claims, and a pre-job scrub. AlterNet quoted The Bulwark’s warning about an “upending of constitutional norms” and its claim that she spread “vaccine conspiracy theories”. Mediaite emphasized that old posts pushing Trump’s controversial talking points were apparently deleted before she took the job.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed Zacharia as aligned with Trump, while splitting over her readiness for the role. Daily Mail, quoting Katie Zacharia, presented the job as an honor and an opportunity to serve Trump by communicating his achievements and vision. The Gateway Pundit cast her as a sharp conservative fighter whose attacks on Democrats showed she could replace Leavitt. Washington Examiner highlighted surprise among DHS insiders who questioned her competence and readiness after her brief tenure during the Noem-Lewandowski era.
