What happened

Doug Emhoff privately told people he would prefer former Vice President Kamala Harris not run for president again, The Wall Street Journal reported. People close to Emhoff expect he would support Harris if she decides to run. Harris entered the 2024 race after President Joe Biden withdrew, then lost to President Donald Trump. That defeat left Democrats debating whether the party should choose a different nominee next time. Harris has not decided whether to seek the presidency in 2028. She has said she is focused on getting through the 2026 midterms first. She is meeting donors, hiring staff and traveling to help Democrats in battleground states. A larger Democratic field could await her.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: MEDIAite, under the headline “Even Kamala Harris’ Own Husband Doesn’t Want Her to Run for President”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets cast Emhoff’s reported reluctance as a personal warning sign, while tying Harris’s moves to campaign ambition. The New York Post stressed resistance close to Harris, saying her doubters extend “beyond those living under the same roof,” and cited donors calling a run “a long shot”.
