What happened

Police detained Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and fellow leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka as they arrived in Delhi. They also detained protesters trying to reach a youth rally demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and changes to voter-list revisions. Authorities deployed thousands of police and paramilitary personnel, barricaded central areas, restricted transport and suspended mobile internet. The dispute centers on a revision that has removed more than 130 million names from voter lists. Opposition parties and protesters say eligible voters were wrongly removed to favor Modi’s BJP; the Election Commission and government deny manipulation and call it a cleanup. Protesters still gathered, and police detained people nearby.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the clash as a fight over electoral legitimacy, not just crowd control. The Guardian foregrounded critics’ claim that the revision favors Modi’s party. The Boston Globe emphasized a preemptive crackdown that disabled protest leadership before assembly. CNN cast the youth movement as a real political force with recent government wins.

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Breitbart News, under the headline “India Begins Mass Arrests of ‘Cockroach’ Student Protesters”.
