What happened

A court released Cockroach Janta Party leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka after police detained them on arrival in Delhi. Their release was reported as subject to a one-year condition not to breach the peace, but its effect on their right to protest was unclear. The movement is demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over a voter-list revision that has removed more than 130 million names. The government and Election Commission say the revision removes duplicate and ineligible entries; protesters and critics say it could disenfranchise eligible voters and benefit the BJP. Authorities said Saturday’s gathering lacked timely permission and threatened public order. Delhi remained heavily policed Sunday.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the case as a voting-rights fight that has grown into a youth challenge to Modi’s government and election authorities. The Los Angeles Times emphasized the movement’s broader campaign against the government and election bodies. The Guardian dwelled on the scale of the crackdown and the pressure it put on peaceful dissent. The New York Times highlighted Dipke’s defiance after release, quoting him saying the CJP would not be intimidated.
