What happened

Police detained Cockroach Janta Party leaders and other volunteers after they jumped barricades and entered Jantar Mantar to protest Delhi’s venue restrictions and demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Opposition lawmakers and supporters had marched to the Supreme Court on Monday and submitted a petition seeking action over alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision. The Election Commission exercise has removed or marked for removal more than 130 million names. The commission says it is removing duplicate and ineligible entries, while critics say eligible voters could be disenfranchised in ways that benefit the BJP. Authorities had removed Jantar Mantar from designated protest sites and named three alternatives. The court has not ruled on the petition.

How each side covered it

Left-leaning outlets framed the protests as a democracy fight met by state force, while tying the voter-roll dispute to wider public anger. The Guardian emphasized a crackdown on dissent and described a broader “season of discontent” around the unrest. Al Jazeera highlighted critics’ claim that the revision could favor the ruling BJP.
