What happened

A Fresno father shot David Gonzalez, a 32-year-old off-duty ICE agent from Texas, after Gonzalez was found asleep on the family’s lawn early Friday. Police said Gonzalez appeared intoxicated and agitated when awakened, then allegedly assaulted the father and his daughter. The father said he feared for their safety and fired once, striking Gonzalez in the midsection. Police said the father legally owned the gun and would not face charges. The shooting comes amid scrutiny of ICE’s aggressive immigration enforcement and rising federal activity in California’s Central Valley. Fresno City Council members criticized ICE’s presence, while police said Gonzalez was alone. The investigation continues.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the shooting as the result of alleged intoxicated aggression by an off-duty ICE agent, not as an attack on federal law enforcement. The Guardian emphasized the homeowner’s fear for his family, citing police language that cast the shot as defensive.

From the right

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: New York Post, under the headline “‘Drunk’ off-duty ICE agent shot after he’s rousted from sleep on California family’s front lawn”.
