What happened

President Donald Trump said Ukraine should replace President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with a leader willing to make a deal with Russia. He also warned Zelenskyy to stop Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries, one day after announcing temporary sanctions relief for Russian diesel exports. Fuel supplies were already strained by the U.S.-led war in Iran, which disrupted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, and by Russian and Ukrainian attacks on energy sites. Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine continues, with Moscow controlling about one-fifth of the country. Trump said the diesel deal would lower prices, while Zelenskyy said it would fund Russia’s war. Russian strikes killed more than 20 people in Zaporizhzhia on Saturday.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Trump’s move as pressure on Zelenskyy over fuel prices while stressing Ukraine’s right to choose its leader. Al Jazeera tied the demand to anger over refinery strikes that raised diesel prices and, quoting Andriy Sybiga, noted Ukrainians have “the right to decide”. The Boston Globe said Trump was shifting blame for high fuel prices onto Ukraine, not the US-led war in Iran that had lifted energy costs and troubled Republicans.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the confrontation around Zelenskyy’s ability to end the war and Trump’s push to steady fuel markets. Fox News presented Trump’s case that Zelenskyy had failed to make a peace deal and should be replaced by someone who could end the war. In the New York Post, Trump described the clash as a response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and an effort to secure Russian fuel supplies. The Daily Mail portrayed the fuel deal as a bid to contain rising prices and electoral damage amid the Iran war.
