What happened

Mayor Zohran Mamdani ordered the NYPD to conduct its first comprehensive use-of-force review in about a decade. Community groups will take part, and officials expect the review to finish in the coming months. The changes follow the fatal police shooting of 19-year-old Win Rozario during a mental-health crisis. New York’s attorney general declined criminal charges, while the Civilian Complaint Review Board substantiated excessive-force claims. One officer retired before discipline could proceed. Mamdani announced $2.6 million more for the NYPD inspector general and new steps to finish discipline before retirements. He said the review should ensure force is lawful, necessary and trusted. The findings are not yet announced.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the order as a test of whether Mamdani is meeting reform demands from his base, while stressing accountability tools. CNN highlighted pressure from supporters who say he has not gone far enough on public safety and justice reform. The Guardian focused on Mamdani’s separate attack on ICE, saying he compared an agency shooting to a mass-shooting scene.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the story as a police-accountability move while giving more weight to fights over immigration enforcement and left-wing pressure. Fox News centered the DHS response, with a spokesperson saying Mamdani was vilifying officers who remove dangerous criminals. The New York Post linked the review to the officer’s retirement, then cast socialist allies as wrongly blaming city police over the ICE shooting.
