What happened

President Donald Trump posted footage of a tiger attack on Truth Social on Tuesday, captioning it, “Don’t ever mess with nature!” The clip showed the tiger attacking William Chapman, but not his death. Trump later posted other animal-attack videos, including an AI-generated clip showing a digital version of himself chasing, wrestling with and embracing a tiger to “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Chapman, a 23-year-old man, died Saturday after entering the enclosure of Altai, a Siberian tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England. His family said he had lived with significant mental illness and called him bright and warm. They asked people to stop sharing the footage. Authorities are investigating how Chapman entered the enclosure.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the posts as cruel treatment of a vulnerable man’s death, with emphasis on the family’s pain. The Guardian centered the family’s statement that sharing the footage was “deeply offensive” and distressing. AlterNet linked the violent posts to questions about Trump’s mental fitness. HuffPost tied the posting spree to Trump’s weaker political standing and national problems.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the episode as a bizarre spectacle, while keeping the victim’s dignity in view. The New York Post leaned into the AI image of Trump taming the tiger after the fatal attack. The Daily Mail highlighted the family’s plea to stop sharing the videos and described the posts as tasteless.
