What happened

Two women filed a federal civil lawsuit accusing former Rep. Matt Gaetz and others of sex trafficking and exploiting them between 2017 and January 2019. The plaintiffs say Gaetz and others recruited and sexually exploited them as part of a trafficking scheme; Gaetz says much of the alleged conduct is false. A 2024 House Ethics Committee report found substantial evidence that Gaetz paid women for sex. Gaetz resigned from Congress after President Donald Trump nominated him for attorney general, then withdrew amid Senate opposition. The Justice Department closed a related investigation in 2023 without charges against Gaetz. The civil case is pending, and the complaint seeks unspecified damages.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the lawsuit as part of an enduring misconduct scandal that had already reshaped Gaetz’s public standing. The Guardian tied the case to what it called a long-running sexual abuse scandal, rather than treating it as a standalone filing. Raw Story leaned on the complaint’s depiction of financially vulnerable women exploited through paid sex, drugs and recruitment.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets emphasized Gaetz’s denial and the political stakes around revived allegations. The New York Post highlighted Gaetz’s claim that the suit gives him a chance to confront accusers. The Daily Mail focused on the filing’s depiction of money, drugs and personal connections. The Gateway Pundit cast the allegations as a political weapon against Gaetz.
