What happened

President Donald Trump formally invoked presidential communications privilege in Rep. Joyce Beatty’s lawsuit, seeking to withhold requested records and block some deposition answers about the Kennedy Center. Beatty, a Democratic representative, serves ex officio on the Kennedy Center board. She is challenging plans to close the main building for a two-year renovation and add Trump’s name to the institution. The administration says Trump appoints board and advisory members, so he needs candid advice on management and fundraising. The Justice Department calls the request an overbroad fishing expedition; Beatty’s lawyers say the evidence is needed. The privilege claim also covers related communications involving advisers, Kennedy Center staff and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The court has not decided whether to compel evidence or accept the privilege claim.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets cast the fight as a secrecy battle over Trump’s control of the Kennedy Center. The New Republic said Trump wanted to hide the extent of his Kennedy Center takeover. AlterNet linked the legal strategy to a Dick Cheney precedent despite Trump’s past insults toward him. Raw Story framed the dispute around financial accountability and an allegedly missing donation.

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Washington Examiner, under the headline “Trump invokes executive privilege over Kennedy Center documents”.
