What happened

Texas officials said they had cleared the voter-registration backlog shortly before early voting began, though some county officials called the statewide effort only mostly complete. A software error in the Texas Department of Public Safety’s driver-license portal left nearly 600,000 applications or updates untransmitted to county election offices, with records dating to October 2025. The portal lets Texans register or update registration while handling a driver’s license, as a 2021 settlement requires. Texas election officials said they knew of no county still processing delayed applications; voting-rights groups sued, alleging breach of that settlement and seeking court-ordered fixes. Early voting was due to begin Monday; provisional ballots were available.

Left-leaning outlets framed the failure as an urgent election-administration breakdown, stressing worker pressure and voting-rights risks before noting officials’ clearance claims. The New York Times cited election officials saying the delay sent workers scrambling, then foregrounded voting-rights groups’ reliability claims.
