What happened

Politico said White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles helped arrange Katie Zacharia’s Sean Hannity interview after opposing her appointment, with one source calling it a “sanctioned hit.” Text messages obtained by the New York Post show Zacharia sought the Fox appearances herself, asking a White House official for morning and evening news hits. Zacharia had replaced Karoline Leavitt as White House press secretary, then left after about five days following a rocky debut. In the Hannity interview, Zacharia acknowledged failing the bar exam and said she had little time to prepare. President Donald Trump said Wiles had his complete confidence. The White House has not named a replacement.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Joe.My.God., under the headline “Politico: Susie Wiles Laid A Trap For Katie Zacharia”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated Zacharia’s exit as a test of the job’s demands, her own missteps, and West Wing power. The Washington Examiner asked what a traditional press secretary should do when Trump often speaks directly to voters. The New York Post cast the collapse as self-inflicted while disputing that Wiles arranged the TV hits.
