What happened

Washington and New York finished 27-27 after overtime, with neither team turning late chances into a win. In overtime, Washington defensive tackle Daron Payne forced a fumble by Giants running back Cam Skattebo with New York in range for a winning field-goal try. Washington then reached New York’s 24-yard line with about 12 seconds left and no timeouts. Quarterback Jayden Daniels scrambled and was tackled before Washington could spike the ball or try a field goal. Washington had led 27-13 in the fourth quarter before Giants quarterback Jameis Winston forced overtime with two late touchdown passes. Coach Dan Quinn said the final sequence was his responsibility. No next step was announced.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets centered Washington’s missed closing chance, splitting blame between Daniels’ scramble and Quinn’s late play call. The Guardian framed Daniels’ late scramble as the blunder that squandered a winning chance, while also stressing that Winston’s furious comeback followed Washington’s blown two-touchdown fourth-quarter lead. Mediaite cast Quinn’s extra snap as a senseless coaching error compounded when Daniels failed to throw the ball away.
