What happened

A judge in Ensenada found three men guilty of murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad during a 2024 surfing trip in Baja California. The friends were camping near Punta San José when they were attacked. Their bodies were later found in a well with gunshot wounds. García’s former partner, Ary Gisell Silva Raya, was sentenced to 20 years after pleading guilty to robbery-connected offences. Prosecutors said she helped instigate the robbery. Defense lawyers argued there was not enough evidence to prove the case. The court also convicted the men of armed robbery and armed carjacking. The three men are due to be sentenced on October 16.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the convictions as proof of responsibility while keeping the parents’ loss at the center. The Guardian emphasized the judge’s finding of premeditation and Debra Robinson’s testimony about cruelty in her sons’ final hours.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets cast the case through brutality, family grief and criminal accountability. Newsmax lingered on the trial’s disturbing details and the attackers’ ruthlessness. The New York Post highlighted Debra Robinson’s call for “exemplary punishment”. Daily Mail led with the guilty verdict as accountability for the visiting surfers’ deaths.
