What happened

A boat carrying 305 migrants capsized near Guhere off Djibouti while traveling to Yemen overnight on October 8–9. At least 139 people died, including 15 children; the IOM said its official toll counts people buried by Djiboutian authorities, while other burials still await verification. The crossing from the Horn of Africa through Djibouti to Yemen is a heavily used but dangerous route for people seeking safety and work, often toward Gulf countries. IOM mission chief Alexandre Coissac called the disaster a devastating loss of life. The IOM said it was assisting 64 survivors in Obock. At least 84 people remained missing, and search-and-rescue operations continued.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the sinking as a human tragedy, stressing migrant deaths and the dangers of the route. The Guardian led with children among the dead, cited the IOM on the corridor’s danger, and emphasized joint aid for survivors.

From the right

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Daily Mail, under the headline “Nearly 140 migrants dead after overcrowded boat capsizes off Djibouti”.
