What happened

North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area toward waters off its eastern coast on Monday, South Korea’s military said. The launch came days after South Korea’s first test of a domestically developed hypersonic glide vehicle, which Seoul said would strengthen defenses. North Korea has expanded its nuclear-capable arsenal, while diplomacy has stayed frozen over U.S. and South Korean overtures and Pyongyang’s demands. Tensions also rose after a border land-mine blast injured three South Korean soldiers; South Korea and the U.N. Command blamed North Korea, which denied responsibility. Japan detected at least two launches, with one flying more than 900 kilometers. Japan said one missile flew irregularly, while South Korea said analysis was continuing.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Al Jazeera, under the headline “North Korea fires multiple ballistic missiles towards the sea”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the launches as another escalation in North Korea’s weapons displays during stalled diplomacy. The New York Post stressed that the demonstrations had heightened regional tensions during the prolonged diplomatic freeze. The Washington Times centered South Korea’s hypersonic test as the key backdrop, presenting the launch as a possible response and capability signal.
