What happened
Former Ukrainian officer Serhii Kuznietsov went on trial in Hamburg on October 14, 2026, the first Nord Stream suspect tried. He is accused of helping organize the September 26, 2022, sabotage; prosecutors charge him with causing an explosion, property damage, disrupted public services and aiding war crimes against civilian infrastructure. The pipelines carried Russian gas to Germany; Nord Stream 1 was a major route before Russia cut deliveries in August 2022, while Nord Stream 2 never entered service. Prosecutors say the aim was to stop deliveries and war funding permanently. They allege Ukrainian state agencies ordered the attack; Ukraine and President Volodymyr ZelenskyyVolodymyr ZelenskyyPresident of Ukraine since 2019 deny involvement. Kuznietsov denies the charges. Guilt remains undetermined.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning outlets cast the case as historic sabotage that strains alliance politics and could implicate civilian-infrastructure war crimes. CNN stressed the mystery and scale while saying the allegations test European allies’ loyalty to Kyiv. The Guardian kept prosecutors’ war-crimes theory central, tying the case to attacks on civilian infrastructure.
From the right
Right-leaning outlets emphasized civilian-infrastructure sabotage and a turn in suspicion toward Ukrainian actors, with courtroom silence as a key detail. The New York Post framed the blast as among Europe’s gravest sabotage cases while highlighting scrutiny of Ukrainian state security agencies. Daily Mail centered the accused officer’s silence and linked it to limits on discussing military work.
