What happened

A vehicle drove onto a youth soccer field in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, striking people during a game. A 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man died; both were from McPherson and were unrelated. The Stryker Sports Complex hosts youth soccer and other events, so families and children were gathered there when the vehicle entered the field. Police took the driver, a 34-year-old Garden City woman, into custody and said she cooperated. Two juveniles were in the vehicle. Police said there was no further public threat. Eleven other people were hospitalized. The city canceled complex events until further notice. Investigators had not determined why the vehicle entered the field or whether charges would be filed.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the crash as a community tragedy centered on children, families and youth soccer, while leaving motive to investigators. The New York Times leaned on authorities’ description of people being struck during a soccer game. CNN emphasized police saying they were still working to determine what happened and why.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets stressed the horror of a youth sports field being breached, then underlined that the danger was contained. The New York Post described a truck plowing through players and families at a Kansas youth sports complex. Fox News emphasized police saying the driver posed no ongoing threat and that intent had not been confirmed.
